Hello Burger King! You’re #2 Again.

The one thing to be king. Your anchor.

Burger King just did something almost no struggling brand manages to do.

It said no.

No to a five-point turnaround plan.
No to a tie-in gimmick designed to chase this quarter’s headlines.
No to defending a menu mistake just because it was already on the menu.

Instead, Burger King said yes to the one thing that made Burger King famous in the first place:

The flame-grilled Whopper.

Then it spent its money making that position true again.

A better bun. Better mayo. Even a new box designed to keep the Whopper from going soggy before it reaches your table.

The result? Burger King is #2 again. Sales are up 8%. Wendy’s armed with a five-point plan and a SpongeBob hangover has dropped to #3.

But here’s what most of the coverage is missing:

The answer wasn’t the bun. The answer was the focus.

“Flame-grilled” is Burger King’s Positioning anchor the singular idea it owns in the mind.

Most struggling brands do the opposite. They expand. They add. They chase new customers, new products, new promotions and new ideas.

And with every addition, they dilute the one idea that made them distinctive in the first place.

Fixing the Whopper wasn’t really a product story.

It was a Positioning story that happened to require a better bun.

And there’s another part of the Burger King story I think matters even more than the comeback: the chicken sandwich they crossed off the menu.

Because Positioning isn’t only about deciding what you stand for.

It’s about deciding what you’re willing to say no to in order to protect it.

On this week’s Positioning Hotline, I break down Burger King’s comeback, why the crossed-out chicken sandwich may matter more than the Whopper win, and what saying “no” actually protects.

The Hotline is open.
